Nearly five years ago the WLAM Foundation established a special fund in memory of Kimberly M. Cahill, the Foundation's long-serving Treasurer and dear friend. Kim passed away on January 21, 2008, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. A gifted leader, Kim served not only on the Foundation's Board, but also as State Bar President (2007) and President of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan. Donations to the WLAM Foundation continue to grow and honor her memory.
In Kim's honor, the Foundation commits all Cahill Fund contributions to projects benefiting women leaders. In the discretion of the WLAM Foundation Board, awards are made to outstanding women law students meeting the Foundation's criteria for leadership. In March of 2012, the Foundation chose and honored Jaclyn Kelly as the fourth Cahill scholar. Ms. Kelly received scholarship support for her education at the University of Michigan Law School on the basis of her many accomplishments:
Jaclyn has advocated on behalf of women and girls in both the education and legal realms. After graduating from Ithaca College in 2008, she taught English in Spain for a year, later using her language skills to teach a bilingual program for elementary school girls as an AmeriCorps volunteer with Girls Inc. The program focused on empowering all girls to be "strong, smart, and bold" through literacy and activism. Thus inspired to continue working with women's issues, Jaclyn has volunteered at the Michigan Immigrant's Rights Center, representing female immigrant victims of domestic violence. She worked during her first law school summer at t legal aid clinic in California, where she assisted persecuted women immigrants apply for asylum. Currently, she represents victims of sex trafficking at the Human Trafficking Clinic, and is also the President of the Michigan Immigration and Labor Law Association. She intends to continue her passionate advocacy on behalf of women throughout her legal career.
Contributors to the Cahill Fund at the $125 and above level each year will receive admission to and recognition at the Foundation's Annual Awards Reception. Held each spring to announce winners of the Foundation's annual scholarships, the Reception features keynote remarks on leadership, and an opportunity to network with other donors and community leaders.
